What Is an Apostille? (And Do You Need One?)

An apostille authenticates the signature and authority of the official who signed a public document for use in another Apostille Convention country. The correct process depends on: Where the document was issued Where the document will be used The type of document involved Documents intended for countries outside the Apostille Convention may require a different process known as authentication and legalization. Not sure which process applies? First Choice Notary Svcs. will review your document details and identify the appropriate authentication process before providing a quote. Our Apostille Process Step 1: Document Verification You provide your documents and destination country. We verify: Document authenticity and legitimacy Whether an apostille is actually required (not all documents need one) What additional steps may be necessary (notarization, translation, etc) Step 2: Submission to the Missouri Secretary of State We submit your documents to the Missouri Secretary of State's office for apostille certification. The apostille is then affixed to your original document or issued as a separate certificate. Step 3: Quality Check & Delivery We verify the apostille meets all Hague Convention standards, then deliver your authenticated documents to you or directly to your destination (schools, government offices, employers, etc.)

Translation Coordination Need your apostille translated? Many countries require not just an apostille, but also a certified translation of your document. First Choice coordinates with an-approved translation partner to handle both services seamlessly. How It Works You provide your document (English original) We apostille it first We coordinate with our translation partner for certified translation Both services are handled on the same timeline You receive both the apostilled original AND the certified translation Translation Pricing Translation fees depend on: Document length (per page) Language pair (English to which language?) Complexity (technical terms, legal language, etc.) Our coordination fee: +$50 (we manage the handoff, track progress, and ensure quality) Translation service fee: Quote from certified translator (typically $25-75 per page, depending on language and complexity) Why This Matters If your document is going to a non-English speaking country, many institutions require BOTH: The apostille (certifies the document is authentic) A certified translation (certifies the translation is accurate) Getting both from separate providers can slow you down. We coordinate so everything happens together. Example You need your power of attorney apostilled AND translated into Spanish for Mexico. Apostille service: $225 Mobile pickup/delivery: +$50 Translation coordination: +$50 Certified Spanish translation (2 pages): ~$50-100 (from translator) Total: ~$375-425 (all services coordinated, delivered together) Without coordination, you'd wait for an apostille, then hunt for a translator, then wait for the translation. With us, it's one process.
